Hypnosis in and of itself is a fascinating topic and the depths to which we can explore our minds is profound. Beyond our conscious mind, there is a wealth of experience just waiting for us to encounter.
Memories from childhood clearly influence us today, yet could there be memories from before this lifetime dwelling in the recesses of our deep inner mind, and what would it mean if there were?
The Subconscious as the Seat of Memory
Hypnosis is an amplified state of mind, where imagery and memories are enhanced. The memories from childhood are usually quite accurate, yet the subconscious mind does engage in a process called confabulation, where many memories, perceptions and fantasies can be bound together into what based on the mechanism of association.
For instance, childhood memories of an apple can be related to eating apples, seeing them in the store, apple picking with the family in the country and even the apple that you may have eaten this morning. In hypnosis, you can experience imagery of apples that are not exact historic events, yet rather you can find confabulated memories that seem equally as real.
What about Past-Life Memories in Hypnosis?
Even though the mind can confabulate, that does not imply that our childhood memories are not real or that we did not actually live our childhood. Hypnotherapy proves itself to be remarkably effective in bringing up real memories, healing them, and then improving the quality of life for the client. Many hypnotherapy students and clients have indeed tapped into memories that do not appear to be from this lifetime.
These memories can be very emotionally intense, quite significant to one’s current life situation and tend to offer enormous insight into present day conditions and behaviors. Therefore, whether we believe in past-lives or not, we cannot deny the benefit of bringing these memories to consciousness and healing them.
From our experience, a comprehensive hypnotherapy training works best when we keep an open mind about these memories and how they can benefit us in the here and now.
Hypnosis, Metaphors and Past-Life Regression Training
Even the most skeptical amongst us may still be quite pragmatic and can find the benefit in understanding that the subconscious mind works in metaphors. Similar to the concept of association, a metaphor can have multiple levels of meaning. For instance, a story could be told about a weak animal who found his strength and learned to overcome adversity.
The mind hearing the story could relate to it personally and find its own answers to present day problems. In the same way, a past-life regression could be considered as a metaphor, which can have significant healing effects as the stories themselves are quite analogous to present day circumstances.
Is there a Reality to Reincarnation?
It is generally understood that memories obtained from hypnosis are not actual scientific proof concerning the information that is contained within them. However, there are now many compelling case histories of past-lives being recalled in hypnosis where the information has been validated through research.
Specific details that could not be known are indeed proven to be in the subconscious mind and while even this is not proof of reincarnation, it leads to an extremely exciting exploration of who we are, where we came from, and what our potentials might be.
